There are many guidelines concerning handling of the fireworks. But that is just because fireworks can be dangerous because the main ingredient in fireworks is black powder, also known as gunpowder. We will mention here some of these guidelines:

• Before buying any fireworks make sure fireworks are legal in your area.

• Always buy fireworks from an established retail outlet whose goods you can trust.

• Buy only legal fireworks which the name of the manufacturer, the words “Class C Common Fireworks,” and a warning label. If these are missing, they are probably illegal and extremely unsafe.

• Before using fireworks always read and follow label directions to a letter.

• Never use fireworks indoors. Use fireworks only outdoors, in cleared areas, away from anything that can be flammable like houses or any kind of buildings, or dry leaves for instance.

• Store fireworks in a cool, dry place and keep them away from children. The maximum weight of fireworks that can be stored in a dwelling is 10kg. Any more than that must be stored in a separate, locked place.

• Check for wind direction and speed while you using fireworks. If there is wind, fireworks should be lit with the wind blowing away from spectators. Never use fireworks in strong winds.

• Always have water nearby in case of a malfunction or fire. Use hose or a bucket.

• All spectators must be at least 20 m away.

• Do not carry fireworks in your pockets.

• Don’t smoke while handling fireworks.

• If a firework duds (misfires) never attempt to re-light it! Leave it for 30 minutes and then place it in a bucket of water.

• Never put fireworks of any kind in metal or glass containers.

• Adult must be present at all firing of fireworks.

• Use eye protection when firing fireworks like safety glasses or safety goggles.

• When using aerial fireworks like Roman candles, bury the device to half its length in the ground.

• Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.

• Never allow young children to play with or ignite fireworks.

• Don’t buy fireworks that come in brown paper. This is a standard packaging for fireworks that were made for professional displays and they could pose a danger to untrained consumers.

• Never point or throw fireworks at another person. Never! Fireworks have been known to backfire or shoot off in the wrong direction.

• Light fireworks one at a time.

• Never give sparklers to young children under five. Sparklers burn at very high temperatures.

• Animals do not like fireworks - the flames and noise upsets them.Keep them safely indoors.

• Never try to make your own fireworks.

• Never allow kids to pick up pieces of fireworks after all is over.Some may still have gunpowder in them or be ignited and can explode at any time.

• After everything is over, soak fireworks in water and put them in the trash.
