Here are some interesting facts about fireworks:

  • China is the largest manufacturer and exporter of fireworks in the world.

  • England had its first fireworks at the wedding of King Henry VII in 1486.

  • The largest firework rocket had 13kg in weight and was produced and launched in Portugal on October 13, 2010. It was produced and launched by  Associação Nacional de Empresas de Produtos Explosivos (Portugal) at the 12th International Symposium on Fireworks.

  • Two largest firework displays are: one consisted of 66,326 fireworks and was achieved, again, in Portugal in 2006; and the other - 77,282 individual fireworks launched over a 5 kilometers coastline in Kuwait City over the course of 64 minutes on November 10, 2012.

  • Some fireworks rockets can reach speeds of 240mph and go up to 200 meters in the air.

  • In Japanese firework is called hanabi which means fire-flower.

  • Three sparklers that burn together (side by side) generate the same heat as a blow-torch.

  • In Britain it is illegal to sell fireworks to anyone who is younger than 18 years of age. The maximum penalty is £5,000 and/or six months in prison.

  • During fireworks competitions in Japan, people can be heard yelling  "Tamaya!" and "Kagiya!" These are the names of two historical houses that produced fireworks and that used to compete with them. The cheers of the onlookers caught on as a popular cheer and remained to this day.

  • Different colors of fireworks are achieved with different minerals and salts: for red are used strontium or lithium; for orange - calcium,yellow - sodium; green - barium; blue - copper; indigo - cesium; violet - potassium; gold - charcoal, iron or lampblack; and fro white - titanium, aluminum, beryllium or magnesium.

  • There are about 50,000 Americans who legally produce their own fireworks as a hobby.

  • More fireworks injuries are suffered by men than by women.

  • In the United States, in 2012, 60% of the year's fireworks injuries happened between June 22nd and July 22nd, with an average of 200 injured people per day.
